Abstract

Introduction: High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a non-invasive, thermal ablation technique for treating uterine fibroids. This review evaluates its efficacy and safety as an alternative to traditional surgical interventions.

Methods: A systematic search of prospective cohort studies and RCTs was performed. We included studies evaluating MRI-guided HIFU for symptomatic fibroids. The primary outcomes were reduction in fibroid volume and improvement in symptom severity scores.

Results: The analysis of 20 studies demonstrated that HIFU resulted in a significant reduction in fibroid volume and a clinically meaningful improvement in symptom severity and quality of life. The re-intervention rate was higher than for surgery but lower than for no treatment. The safety profile was favorable, with most adverse events being minor and transient.

Discussion: HIFU is a viable, non-invasive, uterus-sparing option for women with symptomatic fibroids who wish to avoid surgery. Careful patient selection based on fibroid characteristics on MRI is crucial for success.

Conclusion: High-intensity focused ultrasound is a safe and effective non-invasive treatment for symptomatic uterine fibroids.
