Abstract

Introduction: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a prevalent and debilitating symptom experienced by patients during and after treatment. Panax ginseng is an adaptogenic herb proposed to alleviate fatigue. This review synthesizes the clinical evidence for its efficacy in managing CRF.

Methods: A search of multiple electronic databases was performed for RCTs comparing ginseng preparations to placebo in cancer patients or survivors with CRF. The primary outcome was the change in fatigue scores measured by validated scales.

Results: Nine RCTs met the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis revealed that patients receiving ginseng experienced a statistically significant greater improvement in fatigue scores compared to those on placebo. The effect was more pronounced for American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) and in patients currently undergoing active cancer treatment.

Discussion: Ginseng appears to be a promising herbal intervention for managing CRF, offering a non-pharmacological option with a favorable safety profile. The exact mechanism is not fully understood but may involve anti-inflammatory and HPA-axis modulating effects.

Conclusion: Panax ginseng is an effective, evidence-based option for reducing cancer-related fatigue.
