Abstract

Introduction: Platinum-based chemotherapy is a standard treatment for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but it is associated with significant toxicity and drug resistance. Astragalus membranaceus is a key herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine used to enhance treatment outcomes. This review assesses its efficacy as an adjunct to chemotherapy in NSCLC.

Methods: We systematically searched English and Chinese databases for RCTs. Studies comparing platinum-based chemotherapy plus Astragalus preparations versus chemotherapy alone in NSCLC patients were included. Primary outcomes were tumor response rate, survival, and treatment toxicity.

Results: The analysis included 25 RCTs. The meta-analysis showed that the combination therapy significantly increased the overall tumor response rate, improved 1- and 2-year survival rates, and decreased the incidence of severe leukopenia and gastrointestinal side effects compared to chemotherapy alone.

Discussion: The addition of Astragalus to platinum-based chemotherapy appears to enhance treatment efficacy while simultaneously protecting against myelosuppression and other toxicities. Its immunomodulatory properties may play a key role.

Conclusion: Astragalus membranaceus is a beneficial adjunct to chemotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer patients.
