Abstract

Introduction: Nigella sativa, commonly known as black seed, and its main active component, thymoquinone, have been extensively studied for their anti-cancer properties. This review summarizes the existing evidence on the use of Nigella sativa as an adjuvant to conventional cancer treatments.

Methods: Preclinical and clinical studies were identified through a systematic search of multiple databases. Studies that evaluated the combination of Nigella sativa extracts or thymoquinone with chemotherapy or radiotherapy were included and synthesized.

Results: The review included 35 preclinical studies and 3 clinical trials. Preclinical data overwhelmingly showed that Nigella sativa potentiated the effects of chemotherapeutic agents like cisplatin and doxorubicin, while protecting against their cardiotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. Limited clinical data suggests it may improve treatment tolerance.

Discussion: Nigella sativa exhibits a dual role as a potential adjuvant, enhancing the efficacy of conventional therapies while mitigating their side effects. This profile makes it a highly attractive candidate for integrative oncology.

Conclusion: Nigella sativa demonstrates significant potential as a safe and effective adjuvant agent in cancer therapy.
