Abstract

Introduction: Ayurveda, the traditional Indian system of medicine, utilizes a holistic approach including herbal preparations, diet, and lifestyle modifications to improve well-being. This review systematically evaluates the clinical evidence for Ayurvedic interventions in supportive cancer care.

Methods: A systematic search of MEDLINE, AMED, and Indian medical databases was performed for clinical trials. We included studies evaluating Ayurvedic herbal formulas or multimodal interventions for managing treatment-related side effects or improving quality of life in cancer patients.

Results: Fifteen clinical trials were included. The evidence was most promising for the use of Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) in reducing chemotherapy-induced fatigue and for curcumin in managing radiation dermatitis. Multimodal Ayurvedic approaches were also shown to improve overall quality of life and reduce stress.

Discussion: Specific Ayurvedic interventions show promise for managing common side effects of cancer treatment. The holistic and patient-centered approach of Ayurveda aligns well with the goals of modern supportive care, though more rigorous, large-scale trials are needed.

Conclusion: Select Ayurvedic interventions, particularly Ashwagandha and Curcumin, are beneficial in the supportive care of cancer patients.
