Introduction: Gastric cancer remains a major global health issue. Scutellaria baicalensis (Chinese skullcap) is a fundamental herb in TCM, and its flavonoids, particularly baicalein and wogonin, have shown anti-cancer activity. This review synthesizes the evidence for its use in gastric cancer.
Methods: We conducted a systematic review of preclinical and clinical studies. We included studies evaluating the effects of Scutellaria extracts or its isolated flavonoids on gastric cancer cell lines, animal models, or patients.
Results: The review of 28 preclinical studies showed that Scutellaria consistently induced apoptosis and inhibited the proliferation and metastasis of gastric cancer cells. It was also shown to reverse multi-drug resistance. The few clinical studies available suggest it may improve outcomes when combined with chemotherapy.
Discussion: Scutellaria baicalensis demonstrates significant anti-cancer potential against gastric cancer through multiple mechanisms in preclinical models. Its ability to combat drug resistance is particularly noteworthy and warrants further clinical investigation.
Conclusion: Strong preclinical evidence supports the therapeutic potential of Scutellaria baicalensis for gastric cancer.
