Abstract

Introduction: Many patients with Type 2 Diabetes also suffer from hypertension, significantly increasing their cardiovascular risk. Berberine, an alkaloid from several plants, has demonstrated effects on both glucose and lipid metabolism, as well as blood pressure. This review assesses its dual efficacy.

Methods: A systematic search was conducted for clinical trials evaluating the effects of berberine on glycemic control and blood pressure in patients with metabolic disorders. Endpoints included HbA1c, FBG, SBP, and DBP.

Results: Analysis of 25 studies showed that berberine significantly lowered HbA1c and FBG, with an efficacy comparable to metformin. Furthermore, a subset of studies reported a modest but statistically significant reduction in both SBP and DBP in hypertensive patients.

Discussion: Berberine's ability to activate AMPK is a key mechanism that favorably impacts both insulin sensitivity and vascular function. This dual action makes it a uniquely promising agent for managing metabolic syndrome.

Conclusion: Berberine is a potent herbal compound that effectively improves both glycemic control and blood pressure.
