Abstract

Introduction: Pomegranate juice is rich in antioxidant polyphenols that may improve cardiovascular health. This review aims to systematically assess and quantify the effect of pomegranate juice consumption on blood pressure.

Methods: We conducted a search for RCTs that investigated the effect of pomegranate juice consumption on SBP and DBP. A random-effects meta-analysis was performed to pool the results.

Results: The analysis of 11 trials showed that consumption of pomegranate juice led to a significant reduction in both SBP and DBP. The effect was more pronounced with longer duration of intake and was independent of the volume consumed per day.

Discussion: The potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of pomegranate polyphenols are thought to improve endothelial function and increase nitric oxide bioavailability, leading to vasodilation and lower blood pressure.

Conclusion: Regular consumption of pomegranate juice can effectively lower blood pressure and may serve as a beneficial dietary adjunct for hypertension management.
