Abstract

Introduction: Managing postprandial hyperglycemia is crucial for preventing diabetic complications. Ginseng, particularly American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius), has been studied for its ability to blunt post-meal glucose spikes. This review evaluates this specific effect.

Methods: A systematic search was conducted for placebo-controlled crossover trials that measured postprandial glucose responses after a meal or oral glucose challenge in subjects with or without T2DM.

Results: Fourteen crossover trials met the criteria. The results consistently demonstrated that pre-meal administration of American ginseng significantly reduced postprandial glycemia compared to placebo. This effect was observed in both diabetic and non-diabetic individuals.

Discussion: Ginseng's effect on postprandial glucose is likely mediated by enhanced insulin secretion and possibly by slowing carbohydrate absorption. This makes it a useful tool for managing meal-related hyperglycemia.

Conclusion: American ginseng is an effective herbal intervention for reducing postprandial glucose levels.
