Abstract

Introduction: Patients with T2DM often have co-existing hypertension and dyslipidemia. Flaxseed is rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), lignans, and fiber, which may benefit this cluster of metabolic abnormalities. This review assesses its efficacy in this specific patient population.

Methods: We searched for RCTs that evaluated the effect of flaxseed supplementation on blood pressure and lipid profiles in T2DM patients.

Results: Eight RCTs were included. The pooled data showed that flaxseed supplementation resulted in a significant reduction in SBP, DBP, total cholesterol, and LDL-cholesterol. The effects were more pronounced with ground flaxseed compared to flaxseed oil.

Discussion: The comprehensive cardiovascular benefits of flaxseed make it an ideal dietary supplement for diabetic patients. Its multi-component nature allows it to target hypertension and dyslipidemia simultaneously.

Conclusion: Flaxseed supplementation is an effective strategy for improving blood pressure and lipid profiles in patients with Type 2 Diabetes.
