Abstract

Introduction: Anxiety and sleep disturbances are prevalent conditions that significantly impact quality of life. Aromatherapy, the therapeutic use of essential oils, is gaining popularity as a non-pharmacological intervention. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is one of the most commonly used essential oils for its purported calming effects. This review evaluates the evidence for the effectiveness of lavender aromatherapy on anxiety and sleep quality.

Methods: A systematic search was performed in CINAHL, MEDLINE, and AMED for clinical trials and quasi-experimental studies investigating the effects of inhaled or topical lavender essential oil on anxiety and sleep quality outcomes. Studies were required to have a control group. Data on study design, population, intervention, and outcomes were extracted and synthesized narratively.

Results: Fifteen studies (n=1,158) met the inclusion criteria. The majority of studies (12 out of 15) reported a statistically significant positive effect of lavender aromatherapy on at least one measure of anxiety or sleep quality. Inhalation of lavender oil was shown to decrease scores on anxiety scales (e.g., Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale) and improve sleep quality scores (e.g., Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) in various populations, including students, hospital patients, and the elderly.

Discussion: Lavender aromatherapy appears to be a safe and effective intervention for reducing anxiety and improving sleep quality. The mechanisms may involve the modulation of the central nervous system via the olfactory pathway. However, the methodological quality of the included studies was variable, with small sample sizes and lack of standardized interventions being common limitations.

Conclusion: The evidence suggests that aromatherapy with lavender essential oil can be a beneficial complementary therapy for alleviating anxiety and enhancing sleep. Further high-quality, large-scale trials are needed to confirm these findings and establish optimal protocols.
