Title: The Role of Traditional Chinese Medicine Formula PHY906 in Reducing Chemotherapy-Induced Gastrointestinal Toxicity
Introduction: Gastrointestinal (GI) toxicity, such as diarrhea and mucositis, is a common and debilitating side effect of many chemotherapy regimens. PHY906 is a four-herb Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula designed to alleviate these toxicities. This review summarizes the evidence for its use.
Methods: A systematic search was conducted for preclinical studies and clinical trials investigating the use of PHY906 as an adjunct to chemotherapy. Outcomes of interest were the incidence and severity of GI side effects and any impact on anti-tumor efficacy.
Results: The review included extensive preclinical data and four clinical trials. Preclinical models consistently showed that PHY906 protected the intestinal mucosa, accelerated tissue repair, and reduced inflammation without compromising the anti-cancer effect of irinotecan or other agents. Clinical trials confirmed a significant reduction in the incidence of severe diarrhea and improved patient tolerance.
Discussion: PHY906 acts via multiple mechanisms to create a better GI environment, allowing for more effective and tolerable chemotherapy. This represents a successful, evidence-based integration of TCM into modern oncology.
Conclusion: The TCM formula PHY906 is an effective adjunct for reducing the gastrointestinal toxicity of chemotherapy.
