Abstract

Introduction: Olive leaf extract (OLE) contains high concentrations of polyphenols, such as oleuropein, which are thought to possess antihypertensive properties. This meta-analysis evaluates the efficacy of OLE in reducing blood pressure.

Methods: We searched for placebo-controlled RCTs that assessed the effect of standardized OLE on blood pressure in adults with prehypertension or stage 1 hypertension. SBP and DBP were the main outcomes.

Results: Six RCTs met the inclusion criteria. The pooled analysis showed that OLE supplementation led to a significant reduction in both SBP and DBP compared to placebo. The effect size was comparable to that of some first-line antihypertensive drugs.

Discussion: The antihypertensive mechanism of OLE is likely multifactorial, involving improved endothelial function and vasodilation. It also has favorable effects on lipid profiles, offering additional cardiovascular benefits.

Conclusion: Olive leaf extract is an effective intervention for lowering blood pressure in individuals with prehypertension and stage 1 hypertension.
