Abstract

Introduction: Gymnema sylvestre, known as the "sugar destroyer," is a prominent herb in Ayurvedic medicine for managing diabetes. This review evaluates the clinical and mechanistic evidence supporting its anti-diabetic properties.

Methods: A search of preclinical and clinical studies was performed. Studies investigating the effects of Gymnema sylvestre extract on glucose absorption, insulin secretion, and clinical glycemic parameters in diabetic subjects were included.

Results: Preclinical studies demonstrated that gymnemic acids, the active components, can block sweet taste receptors, reduce intestinal glucose absorption, and regenerate pancreatic beta-cells. Clinical trials reported significant reductions in FBG, postprandial glucose, and HbA1c in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetic patients.

Discussion: Gymnema sylvestre exerts its anti-diabetic effects through a multi-pronged approach, targeting both glucose absorption and insulin production. This makes it a comprehensive herbal therapy for diabetes management.

Conclusion: Evidence supports the efficacy of Gymnema sylvestre as a potent anti-diabetic herb that can complement conventional therapy.
