Safety and Efficacy of Ayurvedic Formulas for Type 2 Diabetes: A Systematic Review

Ayurveda, Diabetes, Herbal Medicine, Madhumeha, Glycemic Control.Abstract
Introduction: Ayurveda utilizes a range of multi-herb formulas for the management of "Madhumeha" (diabetes). This review systematically evaluates the clinical evidence for the safety and glycemic efficacy of these traditional formulations.
Methods: A search was conducted for clinical trials evaluating codified Ayurvedic multi-herb preparations (e.g., Karela, Nisha-Amalaki) for T2DM. Primary outcomes were HbA1c and FBG, with safety data also extracted.
Results: Twenty-two trials were analyzed. Several formulations demonstrated significant improvements in glycemic control compared to placebo. Some trials suggested efficacy comparable to metformin or glibenclamide, particularly in newly diagnosed patients. Adverse events were generally mild and gastrointestinal in nature.
Discussion: The multi-target approach of Ayurvedic formulas, which often aim to improve digestion, protect the pancreas, and enhance glucose utilization, appears to be effective. However, a lack of standardization and methodological rigor in many studies is a limitation.
Conclusion: Specific Ayurvedic formulas are effective in managing Type 2 Diabetes, but more high-quality research is needed.
