Abstract

Introduction

Patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis exhibit elevated oxidative stress and systemic inflammation, which increase cardiovascular risk and decrease quality of life. Garlic (Allium sativum) extract, known for its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, has been investigated as a potential therapeutic agent for this population.

Methods

This abstract is based on a literature review synthesizing findings from human intervention studies, including randomized double-blind clinical trials. The review assessed the efficacy of garlic extract in modulating markers of oxidative stress, such as malondialdehyde (MDA), and inflammation in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Results

Clinical trials have demonstrated that garlic extract significantly reduces key inflammatory markers, including IL-6, C-reactive protein (CRP), and ESR, in dialysis patients. The antioxidant properties of garlic's active compounds are shown to mitigate oxidative damage, which is crucial for lowering serum MDA levels. Furthermore, garlic supplementation has been found to improve lipid profiles and is considered safe and well-tolerated in this patient group.

Discussion

The therapeutic effects of garlic extract are attributed to its ability to modulate signaling pathways involved in inflammation and oxidative stress. By targeting these pathological processes, garlic can help reduce the high risk of cardiovascular disease, a leading cause of mortality in hemodialysis patients. These improvements in biochemical markers are directly linked to a potential enhancement in patients' overall health and quality of life.

Conclusion

The evidence supports using garlic extract as a safe and effective adjunct therapy to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in chronic hemodialysis patients. While it shows promise for improving clinical outcomes and quality of life, further research into long-term effects and optimal bioavailability is warranted to maximize its therapeutic potential.
